The tragedy occurred at 6: 00 local time (midnight Moscow time) near the city of Mombetsu. As a result of the collision, five Japanese fishermen were rescued by the Russian crew. However, three of the wounded died. According to the agency, no one was injured on the Russian ship.
"The collision occurred approximately on the contact line in conditions of heavy fog. They might not have noticed the small fishing schooner. But it should not be there, because it is too far from the shore, " Marin said, adding that the captain of the Russian vessel did everything correctly, in accordance with the instructions. Three Japanese, according to the consul, were killed while the crews were waiting for the arrival of security at sea.
Initially, it was reported that three Japanese fishermen are in a state of cardiac and lung arrest — so in Japan they call those whose death has not yet been established by an authorized doctor according to a special procedure.
